Qn. 1 [ 4 m ]

Mdm Wong wants to buy 12 blouses, but she is short of $8.40.

If she buys 9 blouses, she will have $29.40 left.

How much money does Mdm Wong have?

Total score

80 x 4 = 240 (M1)

Total score of Oliver and Glenn

90 x 2 = 180 (M1)

Annie’s score

240 – 180 = 60 ( M1)

Oliver’s score

60 + 32 = 92 ( A1)

**************************************************************

Qn. 2 [ 5 m ]

Peter went shopping with just enough money to buy 11 books.

However, he only bought 8 and spent the rest of his money on a total of 24 files and pens. The ratio of the number of files to the number of pens he bought was 3:5. Each pen cost 80 cents. Each file cost 40 cents more than a pen.

How much did he spend on the books he bought?

No of files (3 units)

8 units → 24

1 unit → 24 ÷ 8 = 3

M1

3 units →3 X 3 = 9

No of pens (5 units)

5 × 3 = 15

Cost of files

9 X 1.20 = $10.80

Cost of pens

15 X 0.80 = $12

Total cost

10.80 + 12.00 =22.80

Since she bought only 8 books,

cost of 3 books = cost of 24 files and pens

Cost of 8 books

3 books → $22.80 M1

1 book → $7.60

8 books → $7.60 X 8 = $60.80 M1 A1

*****************************************************

Qn. 3 [ 5 m ]

38% of the people in a banquet were men.

27% of the people were women and the rest were children.

a) If there were 120 more children than women, how many people were there at the banquet?

b) Some of the women left the banquet and as a result, the number of men was twice the number of woman. How many women left the banquet?

(a) Percentage of children

100% – 38% – 27% = 35% M1

Difference in percentage

35% – 27% = 8%

No of people (100%)

          8% → 120

         1% → 120 ÷ 8 = 15

          100% → 15 × 100 = 1500 A1

(b) No of men (38%)

          1% → 120 ÷ 8 = 15

         38% → 38 × 15 = 570

No of women (27%)

         27 × 15 = 405

No of women who were still at the banquet

        0.5 x 570 = 285 M1

No of women who left the banquet

        405 – 285 = 120 A1

  ***************************************************************

Qn. 4 [ 5 m ]

Jie Wei stacked up some rectangular blocks as shown below.

a) How many blocks are needed to form the 30th layer?

b) Which layer will have 37 blocks?

c) Jie Wei stacked 50 layers altogether and painted the whole figure with some yellow paint. How many rectangular blocks have only 4 surfaces painted yellow?

a) Identify the pattern

          1st layer → 1 + 0 blocks

          2nd layer → 2 + 1 blocks

          3rd layer→ 3 + 2 blocks

Therefore, 30th layer

30 + 29 blocks = 59 blocks M1 A1

b) Going by the pattern,

37 blocks→ 19 + 18

ANS : 19th layer A1

c) From the figure, every layer except layer 1 and layer 50 will have 2 blocks with 4 surfaces painted

No. of affected layers

50 – 2 = 48

No. of blocks with 4 surfaces painted

          48 x 2 = 96 M1 A1

Passage 3

Roadside ER by Hal Karp -December 2006

Dr Scott Kurtzman had left his house early enough to allow for the inevitable traffic on the way to deliver an 8 am lecture at the University of Connecticut. By 7.30, the 50-year-old surgeon had joined the hundreds of commuters filtering through one of the state’s busiest and dangerous junctions.

Kurtzman moved into the far right lane, preparing to turn right at the junction. The light changed to red. A short line of cars was stopped in front of him.

As he waited, Kurtzman was alarmed to see a dump truck barrelling down the hill on the other side of the intersection. The driver was going too fast – he had clearly lost control.

The truck swerved to avoid the cars up ahead. But the sudden weight shift heaved the fully loaded vehicle off balance. With six tyres on the ground and the other six high in the air, the rig hurtled down the road, straight at the intersection.

Thanks to years of emergency room experience, Kurtzman promptly shifted into trauma mode and drove onto a patch of grass alongside the road. An instant later, the dump truck was on its side, plowing into vehicle after vehicle as it slid through the stoplight. Fifty metres farther, the skidding stopped and the truck suddenly burst into flames.

Kurtzman jumped out of his car and ran towards the burning truck but the temperature was volcanic and the driver was dead. But alongside the rig, he spotted a small car, folded up like an accordion. Inside, a woman was covered in blood and glass. He yanked on her door, but it felt welded shut. Directly behind, flames from the truck licked the woman’s car, and within moments, fire shot out from underneath it.

Flames had reached the backseat, and the door still wouldn’t open. The policeman tossed Kurtzman his pocketknife, and he sawed at the woman’s seat belt until it finally gave way. The others quickly pulled her out.

After about 90 minutes, when all 16 victims had been triaged and taken to area hospitals, Kurtzman climbed quietly into his car and drove to the university’s medical school. After swapping his blood-soaked clothes for scrubs, he delivered his lecture – two hours late.

The crash had involved 20 vehicles and killed four people, two of whom the doctor had not seen. “A person with my skills simply can’t drive by someone who’s injured,” says Kurtzman. “I refuse to live my life that way.”

Call an ambulance!” She saw a woman standing over an elderly man, who was lying face down on the floor of a magazine stand close to the restaurant they had just left.

While Esther’s friends whipped out their mobile phones to dial 999, the emergency number, she knelt down next to the man to assess the situation. Instinctively, the first aid training Esther had undertaken at school five years ago, kicked in. She knew she needed to check for a pulse. She felt his neck, then his wrist – nothing. She lowered her head to his chest to see if he was breathing, then she put her hand to his nostril to check for breath – there was none. His pupils weren’t responding to light, either. She started CPR.

”I wasn’t consciously thinking of performing first aid,” says Esther, ”but I could picture my CPR instructor doing the procedure and that served as a guide.”

Esther concentrated on the task at hand: 15 chest compressions, followed by two breaths, a cycle she repeated for 11 minutes until professional help arrived. One of her friends had summoned a doctor from a nearby clinic when they couldn’t get through to the ambulance service. Esther’s quick thinking and training was enough to ensure that the 72-year-old magazine vendor survived his heart attack.

”I’m still amazed at what I was able to do and the way everything just fell into place,” says Esther, who turned 18 in June.

Deedee Neilson often escaped the chaos of her sales job to enjoy lunch in the peace and quiet of her car. On a warm Monday in August 2006, the mother of three had parked under some trees a few blocks from her office in Victorville, California, in the desert east of Los Angeles, when she saw a man running through the parking lot of the building next door straight towards her.”He was scary-looking,” Neilson recalls, ”and he had a wild look in his eyes.” She hurried to lock the doors, but she wasn’t fast enough.Yanking open her door, the man grabbed her by the neck and hair. She screamed and honked the horn, instinctively grabbing her purse and the keys from the ignition. They were still in her hand when he hurled her out of the car and onto the pavement, where she landed hard.

Her screams carried into the loading dock of the local Daily Press newspaper next door. Two pressmen, Joe Iskandar and Rey Bantug, were outside on a break. Without exchanging a single word, they took off running.

When they reached Neilson’s car, she was sprawled on the pavement, looking dazed. Her assailant had jumped into the driver’s seat and was frantically searching for the keys. Iskandar opened the door, and he and Bantug wrestled the man out. Enraged, the attacker – 90 kilograms and covered in tattoos – fought back. But he was no match for the two younger, more athletic men.

Iskandar, 27, grabbed an arm and wrapped it behind the man’s back, immobilising him in a wrestling hold. Bantug, 34, ran back to the loading dock to get some zip ties – sturdy plastic fasteners used to bundle newspapers.

Given Thomson’s brutal pattern, DeeDee Neilson considers herself lucky. She suffered bruises, and her right eye was swollen shut for several days. All minor problems, she believes, considering how differently the story might have ended if good Samaritans had not come to her aid. ”The real truth is,” she says, ”a lot of people would never have done what they did.”

Passage 1

Philippines: Through the Fire

Mars W. Mosqueda Jr.

Nine-year-old Antonio ”Dan Boy” Fernandez Jr was playing with his younger brother Ken in their yard last June when he noticed smoke billowing from the roof of their house in Cebu’s Carcar city. Realising that his five-year-old brother Nathaniel was napping inside, Dan Boy shielded his head from the falling embers with his hands and rushed inside the wooden house.

”I was so scared to see the flames on the roof but when I heard my brother cry, I just closed my eyes and rushed in,” says Dan Boy, who stopped schooling two years ago to look after his younger brothers.

He found his brother sitting in the corner of the room, frightened and crying. Nathaniel was disoriented from the smoke, so Dan Boy grabbed him with his right hand. ”Don’t worry, kuya (big brother) is here,” Dan Boy said as he shielded Nathaniel from the flames with his own body.

Just as they reached the front door, Nathaniel stopped. A protruding nail had caught his shorts. Flames licked the upper portion of the door as Dan Boy struggled to get his brother free. With one last, desperate tug they ran into the yard as the fire devoured the property.

For his heroic act, Dan Boy received financial assistance from the government and concerned individuals, as well as a scholarship from a university in Cebu City.

****************************************************************

Passage 2

Sri Lanka: Croc Attack

Vijitha Yapa September 2007

R.M. Jayasiri Bandara wanted to make the most of his medical leave from the Sri Lankan army last September. He took his wife Srimathi and three-year-old daughter to the Maragaha Tank near Anuradhapura, a 2200-year-old city in Sri Lanka’s north central province.

There, they left their daughter on the bicycle seat to go for a quick dip. Srimathi waded waist deep into the cool water while Bandara immersed himself fully. But after only a few dips, he heard a scream. Jumping up, he saw that his daughter was fine but there was no sign of his wife. He shouted her name but there was no response.

Then Bandara spotted churning water and bubbles nearly three metres away. Splashing his way towards the disturbance, a sharp object struck his leg and his worst fear was confirmed: A crocodile had taken his wife. Bandara dove into the two-metre-deep pond, searching blindly until he found its slimy tail. He grabbed hold but the three-metre-long creature shook him off. He tried again, catching the croc around its body.

Bandara became desperate when the croc would not let go of his wife. He then remembered a local belief that tickling the croc’s belly will make it open its mouth. He tried it and amazingly, the beast wriggled and opened its mouth, freeing his wife.

Bandara grabbed Srimathi from the crocodile’s jaws and threw the 60-kilogram croc as far as he could. When she reached out to drag him to shore, Srimathi realised that half her right arm was missing.

For his brave deed, R.M. Jayasiri Bandara was awarded the Gold Medal for Civilian Bravery by Sri Lanka’s Foundation for Civilian Bravery at a ceremony in Colombo on June 14, 2007.
